Canara
bank is one of the largest public sector banks in India which is
owned by the Government of India. The bank has its headquarter in
Bengaluru. Canara bank was first established at Mangalore in 1906 by
Ammembal Subba Rao Pai.
The
bank has over 5272 branches across the country. It has 9132 ATMs
covering more than 4036 centers and the presence of the bank can be
felt all round the country.

The
11 digit alphanumeric (consist of both letter and numerals) codes
allocated by RBI consist of three parts:
- First four characters identify the bank name i.e. CNRB
- the fifth character is always 0
- and the last characters represents the branch address i.e. 005123
[The
IFS code used in above example is of New Delhi, Suleman Nagar i.e.
“CNRB0005123”.
The
IFSC codes for the home branch are printed on the passbook and cheque
book. The IFS codes are easily available online not only in the
Canara Banks website but also in the third party websites. Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) has also published a huge list of almost all
banks in India, including Canara bank branches. To make an online
transaction, a user needs to set up his online account with a User ID
and a Password. Also one needs the IFS Code to make any transaction.
The IFSC Code is an 11 digit alpha - numeric code which is unique to
every branch of the Canara Bank.
